    Carpet Cleaning Myths and Facts

Check out these myths and facts about carpet cleaning. You'll also learn why you need to hire professionals to clean your carpets. Give the specialists at Clean Transformations Carpet Cleaning a  call  for more information.

Myth: Purchasing inexpensive carpet and pad will save me money.

Fact: Discount carpet is made with less durable fibers breaking down much quicker and showing permanent damage much more rapidly. This can occur in just a matter of months, leaving you unsatisfied. If you throw in a lower grade pad, this only accelerates damages. It’s best to look for a nice nylon carpet with wear resistance and a higher grade pad. Quality carpet paired with regular professional cleaning can provide decades of life instead of two or three years.

Myth: Spot Cleaners from the department store are as good as anything else.

Fact: Most of these cleaners use harsh chemicals to remove the stains. Unfortunately, products such as Resolve remove the color in about one-third of all carpets. So, it’s literally like playing Russian roulette with your carpet. We use specially formulated products, backed by science, to safely remove stains according to the nature of the stain. With each cleaning, we will give you a complimentary spotter bottle that is fabric safe. Otherwise, look for a cleaner that is backed by carpet manufacturers such as Mohawk. They have a spotter available on sites such as Amazon.

Myth: Cleaning my newer carpet will ruin it or make it get dirtier quicker.

Fact: This is one of the most common beliefs because it used to have some truth to it. The old shampoo methods, which commonly left residues in the carpet would re-soil the carpet more rapidly. However, today we use hot water extraction and thoroughly remove any pretreatments. There are companies out there that could damage the carpet by using overly aggressive pretreatments. You can rest assured that we use pretreatments with PH levels that won’t strip away any protector or make your carpets soil quicker. Even though you may not see visible soiling in your newer carpet, there are microscopic pieces of dirt, soil, and toxins that break down the protective coating and, eventually, the fibers.

Myth: No reason to call a pro, I can rent a machine and save a ton of money.

Fact: Typically, these machines are good at getting the carpet wet but not extracting an optimal amount of water. It can leave carpets susceptible to things like mildew and premature breakdown of the backing. Additionally, if the soaps are not extracted completely it will cause a break down of the fibers and rapid re-soiling.

Myth: Using any rug to protect my carpet will extend its life.

Fact: Typically, small rugs in strategically placed areas will help save your carpet from wear or high spill areas. It is just a warning against using rugs with rubber backing. These backs will permanently discolor your carpet in a hurry. I’ve had people put them under a recliner to stop the grease deposits from the recliner. I can remove grease, but nothing can be done about a carpet discolored from a rubber mat. Many people will use extra carpet either in front of a highly used couch or under the recliners. It is a much safer option.

    Vacuuming carpet

Myth: Sprinkle on powder carpet deodorizers are a great way to keep my carpet smelling fresh.

Fact: This is not a good thing to do. These products contain non-soluble talcum powder, which gets embedded in the fibers, backing, and padding. It simply does not all get vacuumed out as advertised. When the carpet is properly cleaned, the non-soluble powder can create different wicking issues. There are even cases of people having to replace two-year-old carpet from excessive use of these products.

Myth: Vacuuming once per week is sufficient.

Fact: All carpet manufacturers and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggest daily vacuuming. This is a tough one to hear. But, outdoor pollutants and allergens paired with indoor pollutants such as animal dander, dead skin, and dust mites are filtered into the biggest filter in your house. Therefore, aggressive vacuuming schedules are a very effective way to keep your carpet and home optimally healthy.
